Tuneful Tuesday: Louie, Louie
April 14th, 2009 by HiBobTuneful Tuesday offers a random Robert track for your listening fulfillment.
Yesterday, April 13, marked the 46th anniversary of an iconic recording of the song Louie Louie. It has been recorded by hundreds and performed by thousands. But the definitive version is arguably the Kingsmen version recorded in 1963. The song was originally written and recorded in the 50s by Richard Berry. The song has baffled fans and detractors alike, with the actual lyrics being subject to interpretation. The song has inspired entire websites and full length books
.
Robert Plant recorded the song for the Wayne’s World soundtrack and it appears on the Sixty Six to Timbuktu
retrospective. Robert puts his unique stamp on the song, and also handles the lead guitar duties.

Is that Robert on the guitar solo? YEAH BABY!
Love the high AAAAAAAAAAAH and the come on come ons at the end!
At first I wasn’t sure, but now that I’m playing it a 2nd time I LOVE the urgency/desperation!
Robert’s very last (COOL and subdued) a-ah, a-ah a-aaah: Adam Lambert ended one of his studio tracks for idol almost exactly the same way, and it always made me think of Robert. I think it was Black or White (for Michael Jackson week). But the studio arrangement was hideous, so I can’t say I’d reccommend it (most of them were-don’t get me started-I posted on the Idol site “warning: studio versions may induce vomiting). If you want to hear some great stuff from Adam (iTunes) stick to Mad World, Ring of Fire, Feeling Good. The video/live version of Tracks of My Tears is terrific, and the video/live version of Born to be Wild made me scream (in a good way:)! If Adam demonstrates a fraction of the finesse that Robert can pull off,
once he’s free of his Idol obligations, he’ll be doing well. Also choosing the right musicians/arrangers/producers.
I didn’t see Wayne’s World-I wonder if they explained to Robert before he recorded it what was going to be happening in the scene?
I also just watched the 2 video clips you posted from Rockwell/Nordif-whatchamacallit. SWEET! Love the arrangements and I assume that’s Juldeh Camara (again not sure on spelling but I’m in a hurry so can’t look it up) and I love the color his instrument adds to the arrangement. I’m SO HAPPY to hear Robert with Strange Sensation again (I couldn’t tell if all of them were there)!!!!
My favorite ALBUMS Plant’s done (incl Zep) are MR & Dreamland, so…
except for working with Sonny, and maybe Brendan Perry, I’d love it if Robert returns to SS!

Actually, it wasn’t Strange Sensation in those clips. It was the same lineup Justin and Juldeh use for their shows with the addition of Billy Fuller. It’s the same lineup they used for the Womad appearance. It’s unlikely Strange Sensation will gear back up. Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara have two albums under their belt and that looks like a good collaboration there. Billy Fuller and his new group Beak> have just released their debut album. Clive Deamer and his group Get the Blessing are gathering all sorts of critical acclaim for their work.
As we know, Robert is known for mixing it up and doing new things. I think he and Justin have a nice musical affinity and they’ll come together from time to time but I’d not count on the original Strange Sensation to appear again.

I want to hear whatever Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation still have in the can from before he teamed up with Alison Krauss! Apparently, there’s another album’s worth of Strange Sensation material left over since Mighty ReArranger! Think this will ever come out?

Anything is possible. But having it “in the can” and it being something that Robert (or even the other Strange Sensation members) is interested in having released are two different things. Since Robert doesn’t seem to be under any pressure from a label to release an album at any time, I can’t see it being released just to release something.
