  • Tuneful Tuesday: Black Magic Woman

    March 31st, 2009 by HiBob

Tuneful Tuesday offers a random Robert track for your listening happiness.

On February 14, 2007, Robert brought together a collection of old friends under the name of Honeydrippers and performed at JBs in Dudley. The event was a fundraiser for Jackie Jennings who needed funds for a medical treatment in the US. One of the songs they performed was this one, Black Magic Woman.

Black Magic Woman was written by Peter Green, guitarist and founding member of Fleetwood Mac. That group recorded the song in 1968 and it was a modest hit in the UK. In 1970, Santana recorded the song, and it has since been mostly associated with him, though many artists have played and recorded it.

This track is a fairly straightforward arrangement given the Robert Plant treatment.

    Tuneful Tuesday: You Don’t Knock

    March 24th, 2009 by HiBob

Tuneful Tuesday offers a random Robert track for your listening wonderment.

This track comes from the Raising Sand Tour: June 13, 2008. It’s a Kingston Trio number, “You Don’t Knock”. The Kingston Trio got their start in the early 1950s, bringing a folk revival to the American listening audience. Their first big hit came in 1958 with “Tom Dooley”. Other classic songs from the Trio include Lemon Tree, Wreck of the John B, Wimoweh, and Where Have All The Flowers Gone.

Monday Music: Burning Down One Side

    March 16th, 2009 by HiBob

Monday Music offers a random Robert track for your listening nostalgia.

Today’s track is from the Principle of Moments tour, specifically December 13, 1983 in London. I’ve always had a fondness for Burning Down One Side. Maybe it was the quirky video. It’s interesting to revisit these shows from the past and ponder the progression Robert has made with his music. Players on this tour were Robbie Blunt, Paul Martinez, Jezz Woodroffe, Bob Mayo and Richie Heyward.

Monday Music: Baby Please Don’t Go

    March 9th, 2009 by HiBob

Monday Music offers a random Robert track for your listening excitement.

Let’s have another Priory cut today, this one from September 25, 1999. It’s a fast little tune called “Baby Please Don’t Go”. It was originally recorded in 1935 by Big Joe Williams, a Delta Bluesman also known for recording “Crawlin’ King Snake” in 1941. “Baby Please Don’t Go” has become something of a rock standard played by everyone from Van Morrison to Ted Nugent. It’s one of those songs that fits in with any genre and has an ageless quality. Play it fast!

    T-Bone: Alternate Context

    March 6th, 2009 by HiBob

On a recent episode of “World’s Dumbest Criminals”, they showed a clip of a drunk driver who ran from the police. The driver t-boned another car (hit it in the side), and his truck then burst into flames. The segment was titled “T-Bone Burn-ett”.

    Monday Music: Morning Dew

    March 2nd, 2009 by HiBob

Monday Music offers a random Robert track for your listening flashbacks.

Today we have Morning Dew from September 1999 with Priory of Brion. Written by Bonnie Dobson and subsequently recorded by Tim Rose, Morning Dew became a staple in the Greatful Dead repitoire. The Priory version of Morning Dew is a moody, jazzy piece played slow. In contrast, the song as played during the Dreamland tour was much faster. I think I prefer the Strange Sensation version, but this one has a lot of merit, too.
